Static Electricity in the sky aka lightning

The Month of May – Electrical Safety Month

I like electricity. Whether it is the display of electrical energy in a lightning storm or the whir of an electric motor, there’s something about this ubiquitous form of energy that is fascinating. The use of electrical energy has many benefits but enjoying the benefits involves various safety risks. May is Electrical Safety Month.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) designates May as Electrical Safety Month to foster electrical safety practices. On their website, ESFI resources consider electrical safety in the home, workplace, during disasters and storms; there is even information suitable for teaching kids about electrical safety.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) supports Electrical Safety Month with additional resources on its website focusing on electrical safety in the home, particularly related to fires. NFPA Research found that in 2019 – 2023 an estimated average of 32,647 home structure fires per year were related to electrical distribution or lighting equipment, wiring, lighting, cords, and plugs. Some 425 civilian deaths and 1,279 civilian injuries were attributed to these fires annually.

Following the safety guidelines available through the ESFI and NFPA websites can help us enjoy the many benefits of using electricity while mitigating the safety risks.
