January 4, 2012 A recent article in the NFPA Journal discussed fire protection in Antarctica. One can imagine the potential for serious consequences of fire in facilities surrounded by the cold barren landscape of Antarctica. Replacement of facilities destroyed by fire is not readily accomplished in this harsh environment. Early in the morning of December 2, 2010 fire broke out on a generator in the McMurdo Station powerhouse. Click here to read more.
December 14, 2011 Modern computer facilities produce lots of heat and requiring constant cooling to keep equipment functioning. Loss of cooling in a data center will quickly cause equipment, especially the servers which process data, to overheat and shutdown. A requirement inadvertantly added to the 2009 edition of NFPA 75 Standard for Protection of Information Technology Equipment now requires shutdown of cooling airflow upon detection of smoke under a raised floor. GSI's Tom Wysocki is part of a task group seeking to remove the requirement. Click here to read more.
August 17, 2011 A revision to NFPA 2001 Standard for Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing systems will become effective on August 31, 2011. Among the revisions to the standard are changes in minimum design concentrations of clean agents for Class A and Class C fires.
