On September 18, 2026, NFPA Standards published the first draft reports on the 2028 editions of NFPA 12, Carbon Dioxide, NFPA 12A, Halon 1301, and NFPA 2001 clean agent fire suppression systems.
The GFE technical committee addressed over 400 public inputs in developing the first draft report. Here are some of the proposed changes to the standards.
NFPA 2001
- Addition of 2-BTP agent
- Addition of IG 928, a new inert gas blend (this input is on hold pending SNAP approval of the blend)
- Major rewrite of agent use restrictions emphasizing procedures and controls to minimize the chance of personnel exposure to clean agents and to products of combustion
- Elimination of requirement to provide formal egress time studies for all systems.
- Clarification of design information requirements for systems pre-installed in equipment such as modular data centers and machinery
- Clarification of test requirements for pneumatic devices and system hoses.
NFPA 12A
Definitions of “reclaimed” and “recycled” agents added
NFPA 12
- Clarification of requirements for use of lockout valves for personnel safety
- Clarification of requirements for time delays and alarms, both electronic and pneumatic
