California Bans “Virgin” HFC Fire Extinguishing Agents

The state of California has banned the sale of “virgin” HFCs with Global Warming Potentials greater than 2200 effective January 1, 2025. The ban applies to sales of such HFCs in “bulk” as defined in Section 84.3 of Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This ban includes several fire extinguishing clean agents including HFC-227ea and HFC-125 sold in system cylinders. The ban applies to HFCs sold in new system cylinders as well as HFCs used to recharge system cylinders. Recycled HFCs may continue to be sold in new system cylinders and for recharge of systems in California.
