“Wet Collection” Fire Protection

Wet collections are natural history specimens immersed in liquid preservative solutions usually stored or displayed in glass or plastic containers. The specimens are typically used for scientific research. The collections may be found in museums, research centers, colleges, and universities and even in some high school science laboratories.  Most of the liquid preservative solutions are ignitable liquids.  A paper discussing the fire hazards and fire protection methods associated with wet collections has been published on the Fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA) website.
